Goal
The development of sustainable, community based structures leading to the delivery of an effective education that is accessible to all children in Boma Payam.
Objectives
1. To increase community participation particularly through established and well functioning PTAs.
2. To build the capacity of the local education personnel: including the education co-ordinators, school supervisors, head teachers and teachers.
3. To support the community in building a training centre for training teachers and others.
Outputs
ALP classes continued and class ‘graduated’ in November.
Computer training classes for community leaders and Sudan Health Center staff continued.
English classes for women in the area on-going as long as there is no drought or other distractions.
Visits continued to local villages to sensitise communities to open (or re-open) schools.
IN service TT training course held for 40 teachers.
Headteachers' training course held.
Sunday School teachers training held.
Assisted UNICEF in the distribution of textbooks to schools in the area.
Slow progress in the construction of the school in Upper Boma, just foundations and some few tukuls.
More books purchased for the teacher resource room / library.
Library open 4 afternoons each week.
Achieving our Mission
The ALP (level4) was well received in the area, although only 8 received certificates at the end of the year.
There is a slowly increasing interest and awareness of the importance of Education as indicated by the commitment and interest of ladies to learn to read.
The computer classes have also been much appreciated and strengthened local support
4 PTA training courses have been held with a special focus on encouraging girl-child attendance.
The construction of the school in Upper Boma is an encouragement to the local churches
Through UNCEF it has been possible to meet the Minister of Education for Jonglei state, which is a slow start in developing closer contact with MOEST at State level.
Future plans
Continue with ALP classes commencing with a lower level
Start new ALP classes at lower levels if teachers can be identified.
Continue to visit local schools and encourage communities where schools have stopped/ never existed.
Delivery of basic school materials during the school visitation.
Strengthen the teacher resource room / library.
Visit planned to MOEST in Bor, State capital for Jonglei.
Partner with UNICEF & MOEST in Jongei state to deliver Fast track teacher training courses possibly for schools in Pibor as well as Boma County.
Identify TOTs in the community who could assist with the programme..
New female team member from Uganda being appointed, with relevant experience to assist team in encouraging Girl Child Education.
