In the Republic of the Sudan, the long-running civil war has ended and God is opening a door for a new means of spiritual outreach to Southern Sudanese.About two million, mainly southerners, perished in the war and more are displaced within their country or in refuge outside. During the crisis, many animists and some Muslims – even whole villages – became Christian. However, due to illiteracy and a lack of trained pastors, most of the converts do not know the Bible and how to apply it to daily living. Many have adopted a new faith without a renewed heart. Witchcraft is widely practised by Christians.Meanwhile, the South abounds with war-traumatised children and youth with no spiritual foundation. They lack father or mother or education, and hold a worldview featuring soldiers, guns and violence.
Radio broadcasting is a powerful means of teaching the new Christians, reaching the youth for Christ and for teaching life skills and community development in Southern Sudanese languages. It does not require literacy or training centres, reaches large areas, is popular with ordinary people and is very cost-effective.
Transmitter
|
Until recently this medium was little used, so there are few recordings available in Southern Sudanese languages and culture and few nationals trained to develop them. The Sudan Health Center Radio Programme is now at the forefront of this radio frontier, producing broadcasts that aim to change the attitudes and behaviours of Southern Sudanese through education and spiritual transformation of individuals and whole communities.Sudan Health Center Radio started a pilot programme in November 2003, broadcasting on 3 transmitters based in northern Uganda. The work has expanded rapidly, stretching resources to the limit. Networks of stations now broadcast from Southern Sudan itself. Sudan Health Center Radio is now broadcasting from seven stations and is reaching an area populated by about 8 million Southern Sudanese. More stations are planned for 2006 and 2007 and their managers are seeking help from Sudan Health Center to supply programs, training and technical support. The Sudan Health Center radio team is now producing information broadcasts focused on life skills and community development in Southern Sudanese languages. Their content will include community health, food production, micro-economic enterprises, nutrition, return and re-integration, social issues, trauma counselling and other strategic social development topics. The project will then supply these broadcasts to a growing number of radio stations reaching Southern Sudanese.Southern Sudanese families will be the primary targets for radio.
A second and smaller target group will be the semi-skilled; such as those working as health workers, agricultural and veterinary officers, and schoolteachers.

Broadcasts to this second group will support on-the-ground training efforts.
The Sudan Literature Centre (SLC) was established in 1988 as a department of Sudan Health Center. The major goal of the SLC is:
To assist the Sudanese Evangelical Churches in their evangelism and growth through the production and supply of Christian Literature.
In pursuance of these goals, the SLC established the Church Literature Programme (CLP).
The project works in partnership with different Sudanese Churches, the main partners are: the Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS), the Sudan Pentecostal Churches (SPC), the Presbyterian Church of Sudan (PCOS), the Africa Inland Church (AIC), the Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC), the Sudan Interior Church (SIC).
Church Literature Training in Leer
|
Since it's formation in 1988, the SLC has attempted to make a contribution by providing various Church or Christian literature to the growing Churches in Sudan. Conducting workshops has been one of the major ways of training new writers/ translators and obtaining new manuscripts for use in the Sudanese Churches. So far we have produced over 300 Christian or Church related titles.
The Church materials produced by the center are in over 25 different Sudanese languages. The Church titles produced range from hymnals, prayer books, catechisms, and Sunday school materials, tracts and other Christian books.
SLC aim and hope is to discover the potentials of the deprived Sudanese people and build their capacities in writing, editing and translating of church materials, which could be used in the Christian ministry in the Sudan and among the Sudanese communities in exile.
During one a recent church service in Yei, the preacher who was speaking on the topic of “Not being ashamed of the gospel of Christ” asked how many people are not unashamed of carrying their bibles and how many had come to the service with their bibles. A number of people raised their bibles. For those who had none, the preacher encouraged them to get one from, among others, Sudan Health Center. (Dec 2005 report)
The Scripture Distribution Program is a unit of Sudan Literature Centre (a department of Sudan Health Center) which distributes scriptures to the Sudanese Christians and churches for their spiritual growth.
Scripture Distribution
|
Sudan has many people who have not been reached by the gospel of Jesus Christ, among these are many former rebel soldiers. We thank God for the chaplains who are bringing the good news to this group.
The Scripture Distribution Program continues to offer God’s word to Sudanese in 18 of their languages and in English, since the year 2001 we have managed to distribute 65,000 copies of scriptures in various languages. (distribution figures as at Dec 2005). The distribution is done through our Nairobi, Lokichoggio and Yei Bases.
Our distribution policy is one, which recognises the need for cost sharing to reduce dependency syndrome and add value to the literature given that the economic potential of the majority of Sudanese Christians is low and therefore lack purchasing power.
The main aim of the programmes is to “to provide the Word of God, through Scriptures, to the Sudanese people in the language they can read and understand” and to provide Scriptures and other evangelistic materials to Sudan Health Center programs and Sudanese Bible Schools inside Sudan and in refugee camps in East Africa and the Diaspora.
Distribution figures are a clear indication that God’s word has been placed into many hands and God’s word will never return void. Some of the impact the programmes has had is highlighted as follows
