Rumbek is in the middle of the Southern Sudan and is surrounded by so many rivers that it has derived its name, the Lakes State. The tribe dominant in this area is Dinka Agar. The populations is about 500,000 people and most of the people are pastoralist and Agriculturists. The famous secondary school called Rumbek Secondary School that was established in 1947 by the British colonial power has today been converted into the University of Rumbek.

The dominant church is the Episcopal Church of Sudan and Roman Catholic Chruch. During the war many churches came to Sudan as the result of cross-cultural contacts like Sudan Pentecostal Church, AIC, Baptist Mission and Seventh Day Adventist.

Sudan Health Center started operating in Rumbek County in 1973. The base was established in 1994. Russ & Lyn Noble (worked in Sudan Health Center until May 2006),started with the teacher training in Akot a village 32 miles East of Rumbek.

In 1995 Sudan Health Center was officially invited by ECS to begin full operations with health services to the community. RT. Rev. Reuben Machiir Makoi Bishop of Cueibet Diocese gave Sudan Health Center a piece of land to construct a compound. In 1996 Sudan Health Center constructed a compound in Dhiaukuei.

In 1997 Sudan Health Center together with the community established Health Training Centre in Adol, which later became Adol Community Training Centre.

In 2003 the local authorities in Rumbek County invited Sudan Health Center to initiate education programme because the community believes that education is a key to human development.

In 2005 Anthony Makana who is now a minister of Trade & Commerce in the Government of Southern Sudan carried out a strategic review. The purpose of the review was to find out whether it was more strategic to continue operating from Dhiaukuei or more efficient to move to Adol and Rumbek. The results was that it was cost effective to move from Dhiaukuei and operate from Adol and Rumbek.

In March 2006, Dhiaukuei was officially closed and the compound was handed over to the church leaders led by Bishop Reuben Makoi and Assistant Bishop Isaac Dhieu.

Sudan Health Center started constructing offices in Rumbek the capital of Lakes State in July 2005. The construction work began, by making bricks and the contractor started the work in February 2006.
